Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind (1980)

Nihilistic, violent and bursting with chaos, Tsui Hark’s Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind is a bleak portrayal of Hong Kong. In a society shaped by inequality, alienation and foreign power, a group of disaffected teenagers turn youthful rebellion into an increasingly brutal spiral of violence. Banned by censors in its original form, Hark was forced to rework the film before its theatrical release in Hong Kong. Now, in a new restoration, it returns to the big screen. Special shout-out to Lin Chen-Chi, who’s amazing as the sadistic, psychopathic girl who ‘outshines’ the boys at their own game.   Please note: we will be screening the director’s cut. Some scenes are sourced from VHS and differ in image quality. Trigger warning: this film contains animal cruelty.
