Clara Law’s Autumn Moon follows 15-year-old Pui Wai, who’s preparing to emigrate to Canada and join her parents there, and ‘Tokio’, a young Japanese man visiting Hong Kong. Their unlikely friendship unfolds through a series of encounters. There’s something quiet and understated about the film, yet you can feel the loneliness, sadness and melancholy beneath the surface. Part of Law’s cycle of films exploring migration and emigration, this film is an intimate portrait of displacement, identity and belonging. Through (grandma’s) food, language and the small rituals of everyday life, Law explores what it means to belong and what it feels like when home is no longer quite home. The film won the Golden Leopard at the 1992 Locarno Film Festival and remains one of the lesser-known gems of Hong Kong’s New Wave.
