July Rhapsody (2002)

Ann Hui’s July Rhapsody is a quietly affecting portrait of marriage, middle age and the feeling that life might be passing you by. One of Hong Kong cinema’s most important filmmakers, Ann Hui has been a key figure in the Hong Kong New Wave since her feature debut The Secret in 1979. Her films are known for their humanistic approach and attention to ordinary lives, and July Rhapsody is a great example of this. Rather than judging her characters, Hui allows each of them space to reveal their frustrations, desires and regrets. It also features Anita Mui in her final film role, opposite Jacky Cheung, with newcomer Karena Lam making a striking debut as the student at the centre of the story.
