Made in Hong Kong (1997)

Director Fruit Chan’s first film in his Handover Trilogy. He began writing the screenplay in late 1995, with the approaching handover very much in mind. The result is a raw, low-budget portrait of young people growing up in public housing, capturing the sense of uncertainty surrounding Hong Kong’s future. The film is widely regarded as an important work of New Hong Kong Cinema. Made with leftover film stock provided by Andy Lau’s production company and a tiny crew, the film went on to win prizes at international film festivals such as Busan, Locarno, as well as Best Picture and Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
