A Moment of Romance (1990)

A Romeo and Juliet-like love story between two people from very different social classes, the film is set against the backdrop of early-’90s Hong Kong, with motorcycle rides, neon-lit streets and beautiful camerawork. Andy Lau stars as Wah Dee, a low-level Triad member who falls for Jo jo (Chien-Lien Wu), a young woman from a wealthy background. This directorial debut by Benny Chan (Who Am I?) launched Andy Lau as the quintessential romantic action hero, so much so that his character’s name, Wah Dee, became a nickname for Lau himself. A Moment of Romance has just the right balance between romance, action and melodrama.
