Spacked Out (2000)

Lawrence Ah Mon’s social-realist portrait was released at the turn of the millennium. While Made in Hong Kong captures the anxiety surrounding what would come after the handover, Spacked Out offers a glimpse into the lives of a group of teenage girls three years later. Filmed in Tuen Mun, in the New Territories, the film doesn’t show us the postcard version of Hong Kong. Instead, we follow teenagers growing up on the city’s periphery, surrounded by public housing and far removed from its economic centre. Poverty, broken homes, drugs, teenage sexuality and pregnancy are rarely explored with this kind of rawness in Hong Kong cinema. Spacked Out is the only film in our programme to confront these subjects so directly, offering an unfiltered glimpse into the lives of marginalised teenagers in Hong Kong.
