The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu won Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2005, and its international breakthrough helped put a new Romanian cinema on the arthouse map. Director Cristi Puiu, who drew inspiration from filmmakers such as Frederick Wiseman and John Cassavetes, turned an observational, darkly comic style towards contemporary, post-socialist Romania. The film’s long takes, real-time duration and documentary-like approach became an aesthetic blueprint for a generation of films interested in everyday life, institutions and the political realities of Romania before and after 1989. Romanian language with English subtitles.
